The History of The Chair of Paediatrics of Post-Graduate Education with the Courses of Propedeutics Paediatrics and Childhood Infections Diseases.
The appearance of the Chair of Paediatrics for Post-Graduate Education with the Courses of Propedevtic Paediatrics and Childhood Infections Diseases is connected with the gradual growth and development of Sumy State university medical faculty. Our chair was born in 1994 when first medical students came to study the course of “Propedevtics of Childhood Infections Diseases” at Sumy city children clinical hospital. The chair was named “The Chair of Childhood Infections Diseases” and the basic staff consisted of nowadays teachers – the candidate of medical sciences, assistant professor Olexandr I. Smiyan; assistants – the candidate of medical sciences Tetyana P. Binda, the candidate of medical sciences S.V. Popov, the candidate of medical sciences Petro I. Sichnenko. Professor Vitaliy Eduardovych Markevych was the first head of the chair.
The students studied “Propedeutics of childhood illnesses with a course of nursing patients”. There were not many rooms for the staff at the city hospital, so the studies were carried out at the rooms for games at the hospital departments. The relations with the doctors and the head doctor – M.O.Artyuh – were good. The problems which came on the way were easily resolved. The staff of the chair started their practical work at once – they gave consultations, watched the ill, were on duty at the resuscitation department and at the reception of oblast’ children hospital, thus advancing the practical experience and theoretical knowledge.
In 1995 the number of the staff increased. After having defended the candidate degree dissertations O.K. Red’ko and I.E. Zaitzev became the assistants of the chair. In 1988 O.K. Romanyuk defended the dissertation and became an assistant of the chair as well.
Further studies of the students necessitated elaborating of the courses “Faculty Paediatrics” and “Hospital Paediatrics”. So since 1995 it appeared necessary for the part of the staff to transit to oblast’ children hospital. The appearance of two places and the de-facto division of the chair explains the further appearance of two chairs of paediatrics on the basis of one. It became possible after in 1996 Olexandr I. Smiyan finished the work to get the degree of the Doctor of Medicine, getting after it the title of a professor. His scientific work “The Endocrine and Morthofunctional mechanisms of adaptation of the prematurely born with intrauterine growth retardation during early neonatal period” was dedicated to the pathology of one of the most problematic groups of children, the actuality of treatment and diagnostics of which are getting increased. The further division of the chair of children illnesses into chair of paediatrics 1 and chair of paediatrics 2 in 1999 was logical. Prof. O.I. Smiyan became the head of chair of paediatrics 1. Together with him the staff of the chair included associate professor T.P. Binda, assistant candidate of medicine O.K. Romanyuk, assistant candidate of medicine Sinchenko P.I. and assistant O.V.Markevych.
In 1999 there also began the teaching of the subject titled “Children infections” for 5 and 6 Course students. The assistant professor of the chair T.P. Binda under the management of prof. O.I. Smiyan carried the intensive work concerning the teaching of the new course. She practically from the very beginning mastered the new specialty of a children infectionist.
The favourable atmosphere created by the staff for the everyday work and scientific inquiries and the increasing of the educational work evoked the appearance at the chair in 2003 of experienced teachers – assistant professors P.I. Sinchenko and S.V. Popov. The defending by S.V. Popov in 2003 the Doctor degree dissertation titled “The State of the Organ Blood Stream in the Newborn with Hypocxic-ischemic Encephalopathy” turned to the appearance of the second Professor of the chair.
Since 2003 thanks to the intensive work of the management of the university and the dean of the medical faculty, the studies of the interns became possible which evoked the perfectioning of teaching work. All the staff of chair 1 took part at teaching the interns. The documentary base was created, a lot of methodic recommendations, clinical lectures and manuals were published. The studies of the interns were directed into the specialties like “Pediatrics”, “Family medicine” and in not such a detail the specialties like “Obstetrics and Gynecology”, “Therapy”, “Infectious Illnesses”.
In 2005 with the beginning of organizing of post-graduate studies at medical faculty and with the influence of Bologna system the system of education, chair 1 was reorganized into the chair of pediatrics of post-graduate studies with the courses of propedevtic pediatrics and childhood infections.

In order to improve the educational process at the Medical Institute, in 2016 by the order of the rector of SSU №0687 from 19.12.2016 the departments were merged by joining the Department of Pediatrics with a course of Medical Genetics to the Department of Pediatrics Postgraduate Education, which established the Department of Pediatrics.
